FPC is responding to the tremendous needs in our area created by the recent tornadoes by joining relief efforts in the Millsprings community between Weir and French Camp, just over the county line. In this small community 34 homes were destroyed, 33 were damaged, and 30 affected. Governor Barbour has declared it a disaster area.

We are plugging into relief efforts at two locations: Mount Moriah Baptist Church (pastored by Jim Garner, who is known to many of us) and Millsprings Missionary Baptist Church. Food and toiletry distribution is underway from Mt. Moriah, and Millsprings is handling a number of needs as well (limited by the fact that Millsprings MB is badly damaged). A great deal of heavy equipment is in the area clearing debris. Blankets and clothing are being distributed as well. Community Counseling Services has set up a trailer in the community. The Red Cross left on Wednesday.

Mt. Moriah is serving 300+ meals a day out of their fellowship hall to homeless and needy residents and to relief workers (100 meals 3x a day). Garner estimates that meals will need to be served for about another week. Churches from all around are responding with supplies and manpower, but needs still exist.

Here’s what has happened so far:

On Wednesday your deacons met an immediate need: supplying Mt. Moriah with three days’ worth of breakfast supplies (eggs, bacon and sausage, biscuits, grits, milk, juice and fruit for Thu/Fri/Sat). Marc Sims and Richard Briscoe made that happen by providing product at no cost to us or at near-cost, and Owen Oliver has delivered the groceries.

We have committed FPC to provide, cook and serve Saturday lunch at Millsprings. We need people to sign up for two teams for Saturday, May 1. One is a prep team of 6-12 people who will work at FPC from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. to prepare food. Owen and Bud are organizing this effort. (NOTE: Men’s Power Breakfast will not meet this morning. We encourage men to get involved with Saturday’s relief effort.) The other is serve team of unlimited number who will leave FPC at 10 a.m. to deliver, serve, and clean up, and to be of whatever service we can be until about 2 p.m. You can call Marsha (289-2435) to sign up.

You can designate special giving to this project through the Deacons’ Mercy Fund. We anticipate being involved beyond this weekend. Your giving gives us more opportunities to bless this community.

This is a developing story, but we will keep you all posted and ask that you join us in praying for this outreach effort. Be ready to spend and be spent to meet some significant needs right up the road.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CONNECTION…coming May 20

We’re adding some new things to Wednesday nights to develop our TEACHING ministry (remember W-T-N-R?). Wednesday Night Connection is designed to connect us with one another in fellowship and reaching and to dig deeply into God’s Word through Bible-centered studies for children, youth, and adults.

Different sized gatherings deliver different benefits. Large gatherings are good places for robust singing, kingdom-focused prayer, and biblical preaching. Small gatherings are good places for personal accountability and tailored prayer for specific needs. Mid-sized groups can be good places for mission reports, testimonies, and connecting with one another over the Word.

Summer 2009 (NOTE: Due to the length of each DVD episode of ‘The Truth Project,’ we’re altering the schedule a bit from the original plan)

6:00 Children’s ministry; adult and youth electives will gather in their respective meeting rooms (but still, don’t be late):

ELECTIVES
• Framework of Faith: a study of fundamental Christian teaching that aims to be rigorous and refreshing, systematic and stimulating (led by Phillip Palmertree). A number of people have been asking for a survey of systematic theology, and here it is. Join us for a study of the skeletal system of Christian living. Meeting in the Mary Thornton Room.
• The Truth Project: a DVD-based study from Focus on the Family challenging you to look at all of life from a biblical perspective. (Find out more here.) The Truth Project is for youth, their parents, and everyone! This is an excellent curriculum that will last through the summer months. Meeting in the sanctuary.

NOTE: 1ST Wed. nights of each month will continue to feature Women’s Bible Study and Men’s Forum.

FUTURE SCHEDULE
September- November 2009 Framework of Faith-continued
What Did You Expect? ¬ —DVD study on marriage with Dr. Paul Tripp

December 2009 Reaching: projects for the entire church family to reach others

Beginning this week, May 5, 2009, the First Presbyterian Church Web site will publish our Sunday bulletin in both the regular-sized print edition and (my favorite) the Large Print edition. To find these documents for each week, simply go to www.fpckosciusko.org and click the word Resources near the upper-right hand portion of your screen (some of you may have to scroll your browser window to the right to see the Resources link). Once you click on Resources on the site’s opening page, you will be taken to a page with “Bulletins – Worship Content / Other Church Happenings & Events” as the first line in a list of resources. Simply click on Bulletins here and you will be taken to the page containing the actual, dated links for each week’s regular sized and large-print-edition-sized bulletin. Click on your preference and view it on the screen or use your printer’s landscape (wide) mode to print a copy for yourself. It will be our goal each week to have the upcoming Sunday’s bulletins up on the Web site by Friday night.

The teaching elders and the Session pray that you will take advantage of this resource to look forward to the Lord’s day, familiarize yourself with the hymns and scripture texts to come, and thereby ready yourself to worship with greater anticipation of and joy for how the Lord will speak to us.

If you have any problems or questions regarding how to access or print the bulletins online, please contact Keith Parish through the church office.
