FPC responds to tornado victims in Choctaw County

Posted on Thursday, April, 29th, 2010 at 9:38 am   (No comments)

FPC is responding to the tremendous needs in our area created by the recent tornadoes by joining relief efforts in the Millsprings community between Weir and French Camp, just over the county line. In this small community 34 homes were destroyed, 33 were damaged, and 30 affected. Governor Barbour has declared it a disaster area.

We are plugging into relief efforts at two locations: Mount Moriah Baptist Church (pastored by Jim Garner, who is known to many of us) and Millsprings Missionary Baptist Church. Food and toiletry distribution is underway from Mt. Moriah, and Millsprings is handling a number of needs as well (limited by the fact that Millsprings MB is badly damaged). A great deal of heavy equipment is in the area clearing debris. Blankets and clothing are being distributed as well. Community Counseling Services has set up a trailer in the community. The Red Cross left on Wednesday.

Mt. Moriah is serving 300+ meals a day out of their fellowship hall to homeless and needy residents and to relief workers (100 meals 3x a day). Garner estimates that meals will need to be served for about another week. Churches from all around are responding with supplies and manpower, but needs still exist.

Here’s what has happened so far:

  1. On Wednesday your deacons met an immediate need: supplying Mt. Moriah with three days’ worth of breakfast supplies (eggs, bacon and sausage, biscuits, grits, milk, juice and fruit for Thu/Fri/Sat). Marc Sims and Richard Briscoe made that happen by providing product at no cost to us or at near-cost, and Owen Oliver has delivered the groceries.
  2. We have committed FPC to provide, cook and serve Saturday lunch at Millsprings. We need people to sign up for two teams for Saturday, May 1. One is a prep team of 6-12 people who will work at FPC from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. to prepare food. Owen and Bud are organizing this effort. (NOTE: Men’s Power Breakfast will not meet this morning. We encourage men to get involved with Saturday’s relief effort.) The other is serve team of unlimited number who will leave FPC at 10 a.m. to deliver, serve, and clean up, and to be of whatever service we can be until about 2 p.m. You can call Marsha (289-2435) to sign up.
  3. You can designate special giving to this project through the Deacons’ Mercy Fund. We anticipate being involved beyond this weekend. Your giving gives us more opportunities to bless this community.

This is a developing story, but we will keep you all posted and ask that you join us in praying for this outreach effort. Be ready to spend and be spent to meet some significant needs right up the road.
